Advertising link gone from Google!

I know its kind of stupid to post about this but it is kind of weird on Google’s part as well. The advertising link on the homepage of Google which was there till yesterday night was gone today morning. I woke up today and booted my computer and the advertising link is gone. The advertising link on Google homepage had links to the Google Adwords and the Google Adsense programs. And not only on the Google.com homepage but also on the country specific homepages.(read: Google.co.in).

Here is a snap shot of both the homepages of both Google.com as well as Google.co.in

Google Advertising Google India Advertising

Moreover, these links were taken out in so much hurry that the hyphens between the links are also not taken out. Lets hope that this is just a small inconsistency at Google’s end and not a hack attempt or an attempt to breach security!!

So, just hoping that all is fine at Google and Google fixes it soon!

top 10 productivity services from Google

I recently compiled a list of top 10 productivity services from Google which greatly help me  in my work as  a freelance programmer as well as increases my total productivity on the internet. This list is what helps me to do my job on the internet in very limited time interval as well as within the given deadlines which is very important. You can read detailed description about the top 10 Google services here.

The list compiled by me includes several Google services which are as follows:

  • Google search
  • Gmail
  •  Google Calender
  • Picasa Web Albums
  • Google Reader
  • iGoogle
  • Google Bookmarks
  • Gtalk
  • Google Maps
  • Google groups.

You can read the detailed description of the top 10 productivity services here. The fact that these services are so good when it comes to getting this done is because of their interoperability as well as the ability to be used using the same Google Account.  Ofcourse, the list could be expanded to include other Google services which are equally important like Orkut but then I decided to limit this to truely productive services and hence orkut was not included. So, maybe an article about orkut sometime later.

As always comments are welcome!!

online web storage is the new frontier!

Google has long announced its intentions to have an online web storage service probably called as GDrive, AOL already has Xdrive which offers 5GB of free upload space for its users plus a software that can be installed on our computer and can upload and download files seamlessly.  Amazon already has a web service which enables its users to upload files and download files as well as files called as Simple storage elastic. The prices are for per GB of download as well as per GB of storage which is quite cost effective.

Now, since all the Biggies are jumping into the online storage market, so has microsoft with its SkyDrive which is still in its Beta. Skydrive offers 1 GB of free storage space and you can arrange files in the form of folders just like windows as well as you can create and share folders.

So, there is quite a lot of competition for websites like rapidshare which has a lot of market cap currently with TB’s of files being shared on rapidshare. So, dont know what kind of impact does it have on those various image and file sharing sites which are used extensively by people to post adult content.

Thus, there is ample competition in the online storage and backup section and definitely this is the new battle ground for the internet biggies.

orkut introduces Photo albums!

Orkut recently introduced photo albums where in users can organize their photos in albums and describe the albums separately. I think it was about time orkut did that because the simple photos that orkut had all this while was getting a little messier and therefore this is a good thing that they have finally added this feature.

However, one thing that keeps me wondering is that Google has an excellent service for Photo sharing and organization called as Picasa and Picasa web. I think the next step in improving Orkut photos is integration of Picasa into orkut as well as posting of images from the Picasa software directly into an orkut profile. That would be pretty cool.

Hope Orkut and Google incorporate these features in the near future.

top technology flops

CNN today published a list of “Top Tech Flops” for 2007 and I must say there are some weird things there. The list contains around 18 instances which are stupidest in the field of technology but some of them particularly caught my attention and Google it seems is ahead in this regard as well with the CNN list comprising of 3 instances where Google goofed up! google knol–An encyclopedia!

Google now wants to start an encyclopedia called as the Google Knol where in people with expertise in a particular subject are requested to share their knowledge with the entire world. Google also proposes to have advertisements( well thats quite obvious) with the permission of the writers and then a substantial amount of the advertisement revenue will go to the writer or the contributor. Lets hope this revenue incentive will encourage people to share their knowledge.

So, here’s wishing Google all the best and lets hope this new encyclopedia is a success!!

google is looking for testimonials!

Google, in its latest blog post and also the red link that appears in RED in the right corner when you login to google asks you to tell them how do you feel about Gmail and how has Gmail helped you immensely.  You can mail them your “interesting story” or give a video testimonial and post it on Youtube, Google’s Video sharing Portal.

So, lets see how this works out to be especially after the first collaborative video for Gmail sometime ago. So, whether the video comes out good or not is a different aspect, one thing is sure, this will surely increase or atleast google hopes that this will increase the number of users on youtube as well as Gmail; now I know why they are called the “Moguls of Internet Marketing”!!

AIM integration on Gmail

AIM integration using Gmail

Gmail is going Places. Gmail first integrated Gtalk into Gmail, so that people can chat and mail at the same time, then they integrated GTalk and Orkut and then social networking became easier. Then they introduced group chat into gmail and now they have introduced AIM integration into Gmail and which i believe is great! [Read more →]

its google all the way!

What do you do when you want to find information about your topic for a high school project? You go to google and search for your interested field and get thousands of web pages containing the information that you needed. Well, thats what we have been doing for all these years and that was for what Google was designed to be. But now things are different with Google as well as on the internet. Now Google offers truck loads of services and all of them are feature rich and highly competitive with other services. So, now these days, the most of my bandwidth goes to Google usage and I have no regrets about it, they have such world class web services that people will no doubt use google. [Read more →]

Socal networking SPAM is a threat!

Today, I logged into my account at Orkut and saw truck loads of SPAM scraps claiming that orkut is closing and that too the stupidest reason of all, lack of names:) , yea thats what the scrap claims to be and I was literally on the floor laughing because people actually send these SPAM scraps afraid that their orkut account will close and they will lose all their friends!

Here is a copy of the scrap that  I received this evening–

“HEY ITS DIANNA, FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ORKUT,EVERYBODY SORRY FOR THEINTERRUPTION BUT ORKUT IS CLOSING THE SYSTEM DOWN BECAUSE TOO MANY BOTTERS ARE TAKING UP ALL THE NAMES, WE ONLY HAVE 57 NAMES LEFT,
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT, DONT SEND THIS MESSAGE, IF YOU WANT
TOKEEP YOUR ACCOUNT ,SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST.
THIS IS NOT A JOKE, YOU’LL BE SORRY IF YOU DONT SEND IT. THANKS DIRECTOR OF ORKUT, TIM BUISKI. WHOEVER DOESNT SEND THIS MESSAGE, YOUR ACCOUNT WILLBEDEACTIVATED AND IT WILL COST YOU $ 10.00 A MONTH TO USE IT..”

After reading this scrap on orkut, i decided to do some research on this subject and therefore “Googled” the name TIM BUISKI, the supposed director of Orkut and found out that he along with orkut was the director of Yahoo and MSN as well:)

Here is an excerpt for Yahoo–

“the director of yahoo, Tim Buiski, Sorry for the interuption, but Yahoo is closing the system down because too many booters are taking up all the names, we only have 57 names left, if you would like to close your account, don’t send this mesage, if you want to keep your account, send this message to everyone on your list. This is no joke, you’ll be sorry you didn’t send it. Thanks, Director of Yahoo, Tim Buiski, WHOEVER DOESN’T SEND THIS MESSAGE YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DEACTIVATED AND IT WILL COST $10.00 A month to USE IT TO SEND  ”

One thing you will find common here is that the text in both the messages is almost the same except for the name of the company and so is the message with MSN as well.

So, all I would like to tell people is that be safe and no internet giant, either Microsoft( that is MSN) or Yahoo or Google(i.e Orkut) will close its operations due to increase in traffic or lack of capability and increase in load. Infact, there is nothing that makes these companies happy than increase in traffic. So, sit back and relax, nothing is going to happen to your account whether its Orkut or Yahoo or MSN.
